On the occasion of the Day of Dignity and Freedom, 30 Lviv residents who defended Ukraine were posthumously awarded the “St George’s Badge of Honour”

This was reported by Lviv City Council.
It is a tradition in Lviv to hold a ceremony to award the St George’s Badge of Honour (posthumously) to defenders who have been defending Ukraine since 2014 and since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. Today, on the occasion of the Day of Dignity and Freedom, 30 Lviv residents who died at the hands of the occupiers were posthumously awarded. “Dignity distinguishes a slave from a free person. And the enemy wants not only to take our land, he wants to make Ukrainians slaves. 11 years ago, Ukrainians rose up. Without weapons. We went to the Maidan. And so began our open struggle for our independence. Today we have a strong army that defends our country. It is only thanks to our military, only thanks to your relatives who gave their lives that we can come together today.

Many thanks to you and a big earthly bow for your parents, children and grandchildren,” said Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.

“Our defenders are worthy of the highest honours: both on earth and, above all, in heaven. In the eighth Psalm, we read such beautiful words that God created man as little less than an angel and endowed him with glory and honour. And today we are indeed celebrating People with a capital P, little less than angels. We understand that they continue to be our guardian angels, our defenders. Therefore, let us always pray for our army, both earthly and heavenly, and remember our Heroes,” said Father Andriy Sidanych, chaplain of the Lviv City Council.

Afterwards, a joint prayer honoured the memory of all the fallen Heroes. The ceremony was concluded with the spiritual hymn “O Great One God…”. The event was accompanied by the music of the Gomin Municipal Choir, and an honour guard was on duty during the ceremony.

As a reminder, the St George’s Badge of Honour is a city award given to people for outstanding services to the city. The insignia is depicted in the form of a cross with a circle inscribed with the image of St George, the patron saint of Lviv.
