On January 11, 2025, the Drohobych community paid their final respects to Serhiy Sukhar, who died defending Ukraine. The Hero had participated in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) in 2015–2016 and rejoined the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the full-scale invasion.
Serhiy Sukhar was born on November 8, 1980, in the town of Stebnyk. He attended School No. 18 and spent his adult life in Drohobych. After his service in the ATO, he returned home and worked at the municipal enterprise “SMU.” In 2024, during the full-scale war, he was mobilized into the Ukrainian Armed Forces, serving as a rifleman in the 2nd Rifle Section, 3rd Rifle Platoon, 1st Rifle Company of Military Unit A4046.
On December 26, 2024, Serhiy died near the village of Pohrebky in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation while carrying out a combat mission. He is survived by his mother.
Today, the community received the Hero’s funeral convoy at the Heroes’ Intersection. Relatives, friends, comrades-in-arms, and residents gathered to pray and honor his memory.
The coffin was then taken to Rynok Square for a citywide farewell ceremony, attended by community leaders, veterans, servicemen, and concerned residents. Attendees knelt to honor the Hero’s sacrifice and prayed for his soul under the guidance of clergy.
The funeral service took place at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and Serhiy Sukhar was laid to rest at the Alley of Glory.
