Two defenders of Ukraine from the 24th OMBr were awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine

The title was awarded in accordance with the Presidential Decree dated September 29, 2023.

Colonel Lyashenko Ihor Viktorovych and Major Vorobets Stepan Stepanovych from the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo were awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the award of the Golden Star Order (posthumously).

The commander of the 1st mechanized battalion, Colonel Lyashenko, and the commander of the reconnaissance company, Major Vorobets, died on June 19, 2014, when they fell into an enemy ambush near the village of Zakitne in Donetsk region. On that day, during the assault on the settlements of Yampil and Zakitne, the 24th OMBr named after King Danylo suffered its first losses.

Together with them, five more scouts of the 24th OMBr named after King Danylo died at that time, namely:

senior sergeant Andrii Povstyuk, deputy platoon commander, commander of the intelligence department;
senior soldier Yuriy Prykhid, senior scout of the intelligence department;
soldier Mykola Shaynoga, scout-machine gunner of the intelligence department;
soldier Viktor Sivak, scout of the intelligence department;
soldier Viktor Semchuk, scout-sniper of the intelligence department.

Taking control of the small, but strategically important settlements of Yampil and Zakitne was one of the main factors in the loss of the Strelkov-Ghirkin terrorist group, which had about a thousand mercenaries, combat resistance, which eventually led to their escape from Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
