Tomorrow, Lviv will say goodbye to defenders Volodymyr Kovalyshyn and Yuriy Moshchenko

On Tuesday, 9 July, Lviv will say goodbye to soldiers Volodymyr Kovalyshyn and Yuliy Moshchenko, who were killed by Russian occupiers while defending Ukraine.

Lviv City Hall urges Lviv residents and guests to refrain from holding entertainment events and celebrations during this time.

The funeral service for the defenders will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Garrison Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, followed by a city farewell ceremony on Rynok Square at 11:30.

Volodymyr Kovalyshyn will be buried at the Lychakiv Cemetery, and Yuliy Moshchenko will be buried at the Holoskiv Cemetery.

Biographical information on the defenders

He studied at secondary school No. 92 in Lviv. He graduated from Higher Vocational School No. 29. After graduation, he served in Sevastopol in the air defence forces.

After returning to Lviv, he worked in the construction industry. According to his family, he was “an exceptionally kind and sensitive person”.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he stood up to defend his homeland from Russian invaders. He performed combat missions to defend the sovereignty and independence of the state in the ranks of the 117th separate mechanised brigade of the 10th Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Volodymyr Kovalyshyn is survived by his parents, wife, two children and a brother.

He studied at the Lviv Regional Council’s municipal institution Lviv Scientific Lyceum No. 1 named after B.-I. Antonych. He received his military education at the National Army Academy named after Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi and the Military Academy in Odesa.

He served for a long time in Yavoriv and Rava-Ruska, Lviv region.

After retirement, he worked at the Skarbnitsa pawnshop chain in Lviv. He was fond of mountain tourism and travelling around Ukraine. He devoted all his free time to his family: according to his family, “he was an extremely loving and caring father and husband”.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he joined the 24th separate mechanised brigade named after King Danylo of the operational command “West” of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend his homeland. He performed combat missions in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Yuliy Moshchenko is survived by his wife and three children.
