A nearly 300-year-old wooden church was restored in the Lviv region

The shrine is an architectural monument of national importance dating back to 1746.

In the village of Zabolottsi, in the Lviv region, the restoration of the wooden church of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos was completed. On this occasion, today, December 27, a festive liturgy and consecration of the temple took place. A joint prayer led by Bishop Petr Loza united everyone who cares about the fate of the historical and architectural cultural heritage.

The temple was restored by the joint efforts of the Department of Architecture and Urban Development of Lviv Oblast and Zabolottsivka Village Council.

“Unfortunately, during a full-scale war, the target for the enemy is absolutely all achievements of Ukrainians – cultural and spiritual, in particular. The church in Zabolotsi is a monument of national importance, which was built almost three centuries ago. She has suffered more than one war, and now this temple is becoming a shrine where local residents will pray for peace in Ukraine and a speedy victory,” said the deputy chief of the Lviv OVA, Yury Buchko.

Restoration work was carried out in 2021 and 2023 within the framework of the regional program “Protection, preservation and popularization of historical and cultural heritage in Lviv region for 2021-2025”.

“This year, it was possible to complete the main types of restoration work on the temple. Here, the wooden structures of the attic were restored, unusable parts of the log walls were replaced, the outer wall of the sacristy was restored, the roofs were covered with shingles, fireproof and insecticidal treatment of the wood was carried out, and lightning protection was installed. These are the works that prevent the destruction of the shrine and ensure its protection. Therefore, today we can talk about the fact that after years of desolation in the church, divine services are being resumed,” commented the director of the regional department of architecture, Olena Vasylko.

The main architect of the restoration project of the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin was Serhii Pinkovskyi. The works were carried out by the contractor organization Creative Factory VICTORIA LLC.

The total amount of financing for restoration works in 2021 and 2023 amounted to 6 million 860 thousand UAH: 6 million 460 thousand — regional budget, 400 thousand — co-financing from the local budget of Zabolotivska village council.

The Department of Architecture and Urban Development of the Lviv Regional Government Office thanks everyone who participated in the restoration of the shrine, and everyone who cares about the fate of cultural heritage monuments.

For reference:

The Church of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos was built in 1746 on the site of an older one, burned by the Tatars in 1648. In 1867, the roof of the church was covered with galvanized iron, and paintings appeared in the interior, renewed in 1933 by master Ivan Sakhno. In 1961 (according to other sources, in 1964), the church was closed for services, and a number of church relics were taken out of it, including a unique handwritten Gospel of the 13th century. The church was reopened only in 1989. In 2015, the monument was inspected and a decision was made to start emergency emergency works to stop its destruction.
