The scientists plan to complete the restoration of the shrine in the summer, and then begin work on its installation.
The iconostasis is being restored by specialists of the National Scientific and Research Restoration Center of Ukraine, in particular the department of restoration of works of oil and tempera painting, furniture, polychrome sculpture and decorative relief. About 25 specialists are working on the restoration of the monument, and the work has been going on for the third year.
“After all the wall paintings were restored in the church, the question of restoring the iconostasis arose. Since the museum has been cooperating with the National Center for more than 40 years, we turned to them this time as well. Work began in 2020. And even despite the pandemic, and now also the beginning of a full-scale war, the restoration of the iconostasis was practically not stopped,” says Alla Gladun, director of the Drohobychchyna museum.
According to her, the restoration of a monument of this level and scale is an expensive process, but, realizing the significance and uniqueness of the ancient iconostasis, the National Center took over all the expenses. Last year, the Swiss foundation “ALIPH Foundation” also helped with the purchase of tools and materials necessary for work.
Currently, the restoration of the icons of the festive and apostolic rows is almost complete. The frame restoration process ends. Work on the icons of the prophetic series is actively underway.
We remind you that the Church of St. George in Drohobych is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its iconostasis dates back to the 17th century. Now the temple is under the care of the Museum “Drohobychchyna”.
In addition, in 2019, the Department of Architecture and Urban Development of Lviv Regional Government was awarded the international award “Crystal Brick” for the restoration of this unique church.
