The 35th International Theatre Festival “Golden Lion – 2024” will be held in Lviv in early October

The Golden Lion 2024 International Theatre Festival will take place in Lviv from 3 to 10 October. This year the festival celebrates its 35th anniversary. This year’s Golden Lion will be held under the slogan: “Theatre is the language of identity”.

Over the years, the festival has become a national treasure of theatre art and has gained a reputation in the international theatre life of Ukraine and Europe. “The Golden Lion allows you to feel the trends in the development of theatre and understand the contemporary language of the theatre scene.

This year’s festival will be aimed at supporting Ukrainian values, Ukrainian literature, drama and culture in general. In these challenging times for Ukraine, the festival’s goal is to hold the cultural line and show that our culture is vibrant, multifaceted, diverse, original and self-sufficient.

The festival will feature performances by theatres from Lviv, Kyiv, Kherson, Mukachevo, Dnipro, Kropyvnytskyi, Cherkasy, Luhansk, and Sumy. There will also be guests from the Czech Republic.

The festival will open on 3 October at 17:00 with a theatrical performance at the House of Scientists (6 Lystopadovoho Chynu St.).

The festival’s performances will take place in the following theatres in Lviv: Voskresennya Theatre, Kurbas Theatre, First Theatre, Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre, Zankovetska Theatre, Officers’ House, Puppet Theatre, Both People and Puppets Theatre, and Slovo i Holos Theatre.

Additional events within the festival will include stage readings of the plays When the Rain Comes Back by N. Nezhdan and Taste of the Sun by O. Viter. There will also be a multimedia presentation of the anthology of contemporary Ukrainian drama “The Unnamed War”.

Also, in cooperation with the Franko House, a discussion “For the Home Fire” Ivan Franko: At the Crossroads of Opinions will take place. The discussion will be based on a performance by the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre of Kyiv. The participants will include professors from Lviv National University, French scholars, the play’s director, and actors from the theatre.

Traditionally, creative workshops will be held for theatre students and young actors.
