Cabbage remains a priority for Lviv region farmers in the vegetable segment in 2023

Cabbage occupies almost 12% of the total sown area structure, which is 2,009 hectares.

Cabbage is the most popular vegetable crop among farmers in the Lviv Region. Carrots are in second place with a share of 9%, table beets are in third place – 8%. Enterprises in Lviv Oblast allocated about 6% of all vegetable areas for onions.

But the driver of vegetable production in the Lviv region remains beet, the area under it is growing faster than in other segments of vegetables. Since 2018, in Lviv Oblast, beetroot crops have increased by 200%, onions by 70%, while the area under cabbage has increased by 14.8% and carrots by 9.4% during this period.

“Due to the flooding of a large area of fields in the Kherson region this year and the occupation and replacement of fields in the South last year, the prices of vegetables have reached record levels for the entire history of our country’s independence. Therefore, we expect a strengthening of the trend towards the growth of production areas under vegetables in Lviv Region,” said Tetyana Hetman, Director of the Department of Agro-Industrial Development of Lviv OVA.

Lviv Oblast is the only region where, within the framework of the Comprehensive Program to Support Local Producers, funds were allocated from the regional budget to reimburse the cost of purchased high-reproduction seeds of vegetable crops. In 2023, the cost of vegetable seeds was reimbursed to 29 farms in the region, more than 217 hectares were sown with these vegetable seeds.
