In 2022, the area under sunflower in the farms of Lviv region will increase by 3.5% to 41.5 thousand hectares, which indicates the prospect of increasing yields by 5% compared to last year, according to the Department of Agricultural Development of Lviv OVA with reference to its own daily monitoring sowing campaign of the region.
Among agricultural crops, sunflower is one of the three most common crops in the segment of industrial crops grown by agricultural enterprises in Lviv region. The tendency to increase production areas in the region has been going on for 4 seasons in a row. In general, since 2016, the area under sunflowers in the region has increased by 55%, the largest increase was recorded in 2021. Production during this time increased by almost 40%.
“We hope to maintain the positive trend this year, despite the fact that the conditions for sowing this year were and remain quite strict. The weather was not perfect either, there was not enough precipitation in May, which negatively affected the soil moisture. But due to the increased area, we still hope that our farmers will be able to improve last year’s sunflower harvest, “- said the director of the Department of Agricultural Development Tatiana Hetman.
In general, more than 60% of all sown areas under sunflower are located in 3 districts of the region:
- Chervonohrad district – more than 10.5 thousand hectares,
- Lviv district – more than 8.5 thousand hectares,
- Zolochiv district – more than 6.6 thousand hectares.
Agrarians of the region plan to start harvesting at the optimal sowing dates in late August – early September. Gross collection is projected at 107.0 thousand tons. A year ago, according to the State Statistics Service, Lviv region harvested 101.7 thousand tons of sunflower with a yield of 25.2 c / ha from an area of 40.4 thousand ha.
