The Lion Cup, an all-Ukrainian wrestling tournament in support of the Ukrainian Defence Forces, was held on 9 June at the Victoria Gardens shopping and entertainment centre in Lviv. The competition was attended by 256 participants from 17 regions of Ukraine.
The strongest were determined among women and men in the following age categories: U11 boys, U13 boys, U15 boys, U18 boys, adults and para-athletes.
The Lviv region’s armwrestlers won 124 medals, including 40 gold, 45 silver and 39 bronze.
The tournament was organised by the Lviv Regional Armwrestling Federation and the Lviv Lions Sports Club. “Our goal was to raise UAH 100,000 to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but thanks to the active participation of athletes, partners and all concerned citizens, we managed to surpass this bar and together we raised UAH 155,700! This achievement shows how united and cohesive we are, able to unite for a common goal. These funds will be used to provide our defenders with everything they need,” the organisers say.
“Among the participants of the Lion’s Cup was a category of para-athletes. Indeed, armwrestling is one of the most popular adaptive sports in Lviv region, meaning it is also accessible to people with disabilities. As part of our project to rehabilitate the military through sport, the League of the Unconquered, you can also go in for arm-wrestling. We invite you to try your hand at it,” says Roman Khimyak, Head of the Youth and Sports Department of the Lviv Regional Military Administration.
The competition also included prizes for all participants: a Sony PlayStation 5 game console, AirPods Pro 2 headphones, and a large set of pastilles.
