Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, a prominent figure in the history of Ukraine, demonstrated unwavering courage and moral resilience during the Nazi occupation, taking a clear stance against the mass extermination of Jews. He actively spoke out against the persecution, sending numerous letters even to the Nazi leadership and informing the Apostolic See about the horrific events of the Holocaust.
Sheptytsky did not limit himself to words. During…act of mercy towards the Jews, many of whom he personally provided shelter, food, and necessary documents for fleeing abroad. Through his efforts, thousands of children were saved, hidden in nests of concealment, monasteries, and orphanages, disguising them as Christian orphans.
His activities have been honored with numerous awards, including a posthumous award from the Anti-Defamation League in New York and the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Medal, initiated by the Jewish community of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to promote Ukrainian-Jewish reconciliation.
