It is planned to create five solid household waste management clusters in the Lviv region

Establishing a high-quality solid waste management system is an important component in the work of local self-government bodies. The “U-LEAD with Europe” program pays a lot of attention to this direction in working with territorial communities, providing methodical and consulting support. The team of the regional office of U-LEAD in the Lviv region organized an information session on waste management issues for the communities of Lviv region.

According to the head of the U-LEAD regional office in the Lviv region, Halyna Khrushchak, the issue of waste management at the regional level is a relevant topic for communities, especially in the context of their own projects preparation, which must be correlated with the regional waste management plan.

“Lviv communities are participants in the U-LEAD with Europe Program initiative on waste management. Our experts advise communities on a number of issues related to solid waste management. Specialists from territorial communities are working on creating their own waste management system, so it is important for them to understand what mechanisms are laid down in the regional plan at the level of Lviv Oblast,” said Halyna Khrushchak.

The deputy director of the department of ecology and natural resources of the Lviv regional state administration, Hanna Bashta, told the participants of the event about the process of developing a regional waste management plan in the Lviv region. The specialist said that the draft plan was started to be developed back in 2019-2020, but conditions have changed since then.

“Our main task is to develop an effective plan, which will consist of specific steps and tools for solid household waste management. For this purpose, the Lviv region was divided into five solid waste management clusters in order to cover the entire territory as efficiently as possible and establish a high-quality process of waste collection and processing. Thanks to clusters, it is much easier to analyze and determine logistics,” Hanna Bashta said

The draft plan defines solid waste management measures, which include the collection of various types of waste, their processing, including the creation of appropriate infrastructure.

Hanna Bashta added that about 30% of all waste in the Lviv region falls on the city of Lviv. When developing the plan, the geographical location, demographic situation, economic activity and financial capacity of the community are taken into account.

The participants of the information session were also presented with project initiatives of communities of the Lviv region in the field of waste management.

We will remind that “U-LEAD with Europe” launched a new educational program for representatives of territorial communities “Steps for specialists. Waste Management”. Five communities from Lviv Oblast were selected to participate in the initiative – Mostyska, Khodorivska, Boryslavska, Sambirska and Skhidnytska.
