In total, in 2023, 10403 road accidents occurred on the roads of the region. In these accidents, 220 people were killed and 2656 suffered injuries of varying degrees.
“Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, the number of cars traveling on national roads has increased significantly in Lviv region, as in the border region, but this does not negate the responsibility of the perpetrators of road accidents, both drivers and pedestrians,” the Department of Civil Protection of the Lviv Regional State Administration noted.
Unfortunately, the traffic statistics for the first two months of this year are also not encouraging. As of March 1, 2024, 1576 road accidents were recorded in the Lviv region, 247 of which involved people. At the same time, 34 people died and 354 were injured.
According to the National Police, the main causes of these accidents were
Exceeding the safe and established speed limit (39%);
violation of maneuvering rules (19%);
failure to keep a safe distance (14%);
driving under the influence of alcohol (6%);
violation of pedestrian crossing rules (6%);
other (16%).
“The statistics are very sad. But the most striking thing is that compared to other regions, Lviv region took the first place in terms of both the number of people killed and injured in road accidents. The weather conditions are not favorable at the moment. Due to precipitation and heavy fog, visibility on the roads is limited. Therefore, I urge all road users without exception to be responsible, because recklessness on the road can cost lives,” said Igor Tuz, Director of the Civil Protection Department of Lviv Regional State Administration.
