Sisters gave birth to babies on Christmas Day in the maternity ward of the Lviv Children’s Hospital

Sisters gave birth to two children at Christmas. 25-year-old Anna and 20-year-old Antonina’s waters broke at the same time, and a few hours later children were born: the older sister had a girl weighing 3,070 grams and a height of 53 cm, the younger had a boy weighing 3,060 grams and 52 cm tall.

During family births, the hospital’s specialists monitored the babies’ intrauterine condition with the help of modern cardiotocography devices, received as part of charitable assistance from the Unicef Ukraine Children’s Fund. Such monitors show the heart rate of babies and their motor activity in the womb, and also help doctors monitor the oxygen level in the babies’ bodies in real time and adjust the birth process. This is necessary to avoid hypoxia of the fetus – a pathology in which the baby’s tissues and organs are not sufficiently saturated with oxygen.

“Statistics show that every tenth child is at risk of developing hypoxia during difficult natural births. Among them is little Romchyk. 26-year-old Olga, the boy’s mother, came to the hospital from Stryi to give birth. She was 39 weeks pregnant. The woman felt well, but during a routine check-up, our doctors discovered that the baby’s heart rate was low. Cardiotocography indicators were 5 points with a norm of 8-10. The woman was immediately prepared for a caesarean section. This is how Romchyk was born, who had difficulty breathing. A team of neonatologists and cardiac surgeons immediately examined the child and, finding difficulty breathing, connected him to a ventilator. For two days, he was closely monitored by intensivists, and as soon as his breathing normalized and his heartbeat returned to normal, the boy was transferred to the wards of the pregnancy pathology department. And in two more days, the healthy baby was discharged home,” doctors of the maternity ward of St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital explain.

The maternity ward at St. Nicholas Hospital has been operating for six months. During this time, obstetricians and gynecologists helped 231 babies to be born. Children are born in comfortable conditions with modern technical equipment. In addition to CTG machines, thanks to Unicef Ukraine, the maternity hospital has high-quality and comfortable convertible beds, resuscitation systems, and neonatal tables. The equipment is also used by a team of cardiac surgeons for emergency care of children born with heart defects.
