An icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary was found yesterday at the Shehyny checkpoint on the border with Poland.
During an in-depth inspection of a car Mercedes, #border guards of the 7th Carpathian border guard detachment together with employees of the Lviv customs office found a metal-framed icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It was found in the luggage compartment of the car among personal belongings. The owner, who is an antiquities connoisseur, was not in the car, and the driver said that he was supposed to deliver the parcel containing the icon to the Netherlands. The man said that he did not know about the presence of the icon in the car, and that he had picked up the box with the items from the post office.
Customs officials seized the item and drew up a report on violation of customs regulations. An expert examination will determine whether the find is of cultural or historical value.
