The winners of the 2023/2024 school athletics league have been determined in Lviv. Among boys and girls, students from the same educational institution, Lyceum No. 18, became the best in the team result.
This academic year, the school league athletics competition was held for the first time. They were held among boys and girls of two age categories: 6-7 and 8-9 grades. More than 1550 students took part in the district stage of the school league in this sport.
“The city stage of athletics among girls and boys, despite the not very favorable weather conditions, was held on a very large scale: different disciplines, dozens of participants, hundreds of fans. The emotions of the children and their feedback about the school leagues motivate us to develop and become even better,” said Vitalii Kovalenko, project coordinator of the Lviv School Sports Leagues.
Twenty-four teams took part in the city stage – 12 in the 6-7 grade category and 12 in the 8-9 grade category.
The 6-7th grade teams competed in a track and field relay: each member of the relay covered 200 meters. Thus, the girls’ winners of the competition were students of school No. 54 (Pandas), and the boys’ best were students of school No. 29 (White Sharks).
The 8th and 9th grade teams competed in 6 different disciplines: 60, 300, and 600 meters, long and high jumps, and ball throwing. Here, the winning teams were chosen based on the total of all individual victories. Coincidentally, the best among both girls and boys were students of Lyceum No. 18 (White Storks), so both cups went to the same school.
“We are very pleased with the result of our team and our boys’ team. We trained a lot, hoped for medals and are glad that we showed decent results. We are very proud of ourselves. We are grateful to the coaches and teachers who trained us and to the Armed Forces for making it possible to hold such competitions,” said Tatyana Korablyova, a 9th grade student of Lyceum No. 18 and a participant in the track and field competition.
Interestingly, today the league winners were greeted with a standing ovation at their school. The children organized a symbolic “corridor of honor,” so the winners felt like real champions of Lviv.
“The emotions from these leagues overwhelm us, teachers and students alike. It is very important, because schoolchildren’s involvement in sports is primarily about their health and quality of life. We want our children to be healthy, so we do our best to instill in them a love of sports,” said Andriy Zakalyuk, Head of the Education Department of Lviv City Council.

Lviv School Sports Leagues are sports competitions developed in accordance with the world and European experience of such events. The main goal of the project is to create an atmosphere of a sports holiday among schoolchildren of the Lviv city territorial community, as well as to increase the number of schoolchildren who play sports on a regular basis and lead a healthy lifestyle.
As of today, the final league competitions in basketball, volleyball and athletics have already taken place. The finals in floorball, cheerleading and football are still to come.
