Lviv Opera Celebrated International Theatre Day and Supported the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Today, March 27, celebrations were held at the Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Solomiya Krushelnytska on the occasion of International Theatre Day.
Vasyl Vovkun Received the National Award
Recently, the General Director-Artistic Director of Lviv Opera, Vasyl Vovkun, became a laureate of the National Shevchenko Prize of Ukraine in the category of ‘Theatre Art’. This award was given to the People’s Artist, among other reasons, for his productions realized within the framework of the ‘Ukrainian Breakthrough’: the opera ‘Fox Mykyta’, the ballet ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’, and the theatrical cantata ‘Psalms of War’.
The monetary reward, amounting to 484.4 thousand UAH, was directed by Vasyl Vovkun towards the purchase of drones for the 24th Brigade named after King Danylo. The drones were inscribed with the name ‘Taras’.
Support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The team at Lviv Opera, like most Ukrainian theaters, has been volunteering for the military since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion: they weave camouflage nets here and monthly donate funds collected during performances to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
‘Congratulations and thank you to the actors, directors, scriptwriters, artists, everyone who creates the magic of the stage, who allows us to draw wisdom, strength, learn and relax, to be inspired and fascinated by the art of theater. I bow to all Lviv theater-goers who exchanged the stage for the front, who protect or have protected us from the enemy. I know that from the first day of the full-scale war, our Lviv theaters have sheltered many people displaced by the war from their homes. I know that theater workers weave camouflage nets and raise funds for our defenders,’ said the Acting Head of Lviv Regional Council Yuriy Kholod.
‘Just this year, in January, the theater team transferred 700 thousand UAH, and the same amount in February, to the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo. Last year, funds collected from the premiere of ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’, amounting to over 4 million UAH, were also transferred for the needs of the 24th Brigade. The theater constantly supports the Armed Forces of Ukraine,’ said Vasyl Vovkun.
During the celebrations, the theater artists of Lviv Opera were also awarded Certificates of the Lviv Regional Council. They were presented by the regional council deputy Tatyana Pysmenna.
