Exhibition “The Black Palette of War” by artist Oksana Hirniak opens in Lviv Museum of the History of Religion

Until 22 February 2025, the Lviv Museum of the History of Religion will host a unique exhibition of graphics “The Black Palette of War” created by the renowned artist-restorer Oksana Hirniak.

The exhibition, which opened on 10 December, features more than 50 black-and-white works made in modern experimental techniques. The author uses a combination of acrylic and marker to create a powerful emotional effect and convey the depth of her ideas. Black and white colours play a key role here, focusing on the main elements of the composition.

Subject matter and sources of inspiration

Oksana Hirniak draws inspiration from real life, reinterpreting her own experiences and emotions. Her works cover a wide range of topics, from the horror of war to faith in a better future. The viewer can experience the whole spectrum of feelings: some drawings evoke sadness, others make you think, and others give you hope.

The series of works presented at the exhibition are divided into three key cycles:

  1. “We Are Not the Target ” – a reflection of the tragedy of war and powerlessness in the face of its scale.
  2. “Rhythms of Nature ” – the indestructibility of nature even in the most difficult times.
  3. “And by your spirit ” – the strength of the human spirit, faith and hope for rebirth.

Symbolism and artistic techniques

The works that combine images of destroyed cities with free birds attract special attention. The contrast between destruction and freedom conveys the idea of rebirth from the ashes. Black acrylic and white marker lines create the effect of depth and dynamics, which enhances the emotional impact of the graphics.

“These three series reveal different aspects of war, from destruction to hope. The works remind us of the tragedy, but at the same time call us to believe in a better future,” says Oksana Hirniak.
