In order to increase awareness and protection, mosaic works in Lviv are marked with the international monument protection sign “Blue Shield”. We are talking about the mosaics at the 81st location, which are included in the list of valuable and are objects of cultural heritage. To date, several mosaic works have already been identified, in particular, on the street Medovay Pechery, 71, on the street Promyslova, 39, on the street Kerchenska, 8.
The inscription “Object of cultural heritage” is placed on the “Blue Shield” emblem, which is already used in Lviv. Protected by law.”
As the manager of affairs of the executive committee, acting head of the historical environment protection department of the LMR, Nataliya Alekseeva, a total of 20 mosaic works are to be identified in the city over the course of several days. On the rest of the mosaics, the Blue Shield emblem is planned to be placed at the end of this year – at the beginning of next year.
International recognition will increase the awareness of both the owners of buildings with panels and the public in general about the value of mosaic works.
“Back in 2019, the city council formed a list of valuable mosaics. But the owners of buildings with mosaics change, and the issue of preserving these works is not kept in focus. Therefore, in order to increase awareness of the value and preservation of these mosaics as objects of cultural heritage, we decided to mark them with the “Blue Shield” emblem. It is an international monument, it is recognizable, and we hope that it can protect them from possible vandalism.
Within the available funds, we ordered the first 20 plates. Depending on the funding, we will complete familiarization of all mosaics either by the end of this year or at the beginning of the next,” Nataliya Alekseeva noted.
The official added that the city is warning owners of buildings with mosaics to carry out identification works. If the mosaic works are located in the interiors of the premises, then permission of the owners is required.
“We are sending letters and warning the owners that such work will be carried out. In some locations, we are still working on access to the premises. Because there are about 20 mosaics that are placed in the interiors of houses. And in this case, the owner’s permission is required,” Nataliya Alekseeva added.
We will remind you that in 2019 the city approved the list of valuable mosaics on the territory of Lviv and called on the owners of the buildings where they are located to contribute to the preservation of these works. Today, this list includes mosaic works at 81 addresses located on small architectural forms, on facades and in the interiors of buildings.
