In Lviv, the Soviet inscription will disappear from the protective boards at the monuments of cultural heritage

In Lviv, the inscription “Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic” will disappear from the old-style security boards placed at cultural heritage sites.

Now the city is testing the method of removing these inscriptions. This was reported in the Department of Protection of the Historical Environment of the LMR.

“It is not advisable to dismantle the cast-iron guard boards of the old model, which are placed at the monuments of cultural heritage, because they are strong and properly indicate the status of the building. Their style was developed in the 1970s on the basis of fonts and ornaments developed by the outstanding Ukrainian graphic artist Heorhiy Narbut. The only inscription subject to decommunization is the inscription “Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic”. Now we are testing the method of removing these inscriptions and will make a final decision,” the Department of Protection of the Historical Environment of the LMR noted.

At the same time, dismantling of such tables is possible in those cases where security boards of a new model have already been installed on landmark buildings, in accordance with the “Procedure for the installation and maintenance of security boards and security signs on immovable landmarks”.

As Nataliya Alekseeva, head of affairs of the executive committee of the city council, noted, there are still about 50 security boards with Soviet inscriptions in Lviv, which should be removed.
