An open architectural competition in Sokal has concluded, determining the best project for a memorial information plaque honoring fallen defenders of Ukraine in the Russo-Ukrainian war. The monument will be installed between Sheptytsky Street and the territory of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
The competition lasted over four months and included plans for a comprehensive improvement of the surrounding area, including:
- extensive landscaping;
- additional street lighting;
- a relaxation area with benches.
After three jury meetings, the winning project was chosen—designed by architect Vitaliy Bilous from Lviv.
Features of the Selected Project
The jury reviewed two submitted projects and discussed three potential modifications to the winning design. Following consultations with the families of fallen heroes and public organizations, the final project was adjusted to include:
- a gradual height transition from the road to the sidewalk;
- lowering the entire memorial complex by two steps relative to the sidewalk level;
- adding a pedestrian crossing and a ramp for people with limited mobility.
The project ensures that the central passage to the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul remains open. The Fallen Heroes Memorial will be placed on the right side of the passage, integrating harmoniously with the church’s architecture, while a relaxation area for visitors will be on the left.
According to the Sokal City Council, jury members, and families of the fallen soldiers, this project best meets the community’s expectations. Once funding is allocated at the next city council session, a contract will be signed with the competition winner for project documentation development. Further refinements to structural elements and decorations are planned during the working design phase.
