This innovation was introduced at the suggestion of the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health.
In order to popularize the consumption of iodine-enriched products among the population, the Center called on a number of food supermarkets to install logos (“Contains iodine” marks) for food products that contain iodine: iodized salt, squid, sea cabbage, shrimp, various types of fish, potatoes , apples, chicken egg, etc.
Now the “Rukavychka” supermarket chain responded to the Center’s initiative.
As noted by the head of the Center, Nataliya Ivanchenko, today in Ukraine the problem of iodine deficiency is extremely urgent, in particular, in the western regions. Therefore, it is important to inform the population about the need for systematic consumption of iodine-containing food products.
“Mass prevention of iodine deficiency is designed for all residents of the endemic region and involves the consumption of food products enriched with iodine. At the same time, preventive effectiveness is achieved when more than 90% of the population is covered by these measures.
The physiological significance of iodine for the human body is that it takes an active part in the function of the thyroid gland, is part of its hormones that regulate metabolism, energy processes and body heat exchange.
We are sincerely grateful that the “Rukavychka” network supported such an important initiative!”, Nataliya Ivanchenko noted.
The center is calling on other grocery chains to join the initiative by placing signs with the inscription “Contains iodine” next to iodine-containing products.
