Lviv Court of Appeal upholds custody of suspect in murder of Iryna Farion

The suspect’s defence lawyer filed an appeal against the previous ruling of the Halych District Court, which had imposed a pre-trial restraint on the 18-year-old – detention without bail – and asked to cancel it and impose a different measure of restraint – round-the-clock house arrest.

The Lviv Court of Appeal dismissed the petition and upheld the previous court decision to impose a preventive measure, meaning that the suspect will remain in custody without the possibility of bail.

As previously reported, on 19 July, at around 19:30, an unknown person shot 60-year-old public activist Iryna Farion on a street in Lviv. She was hospitalised with a head wound and died a few hours later.

On 25 July, law enforcement officers detained the perpetrator in the city of Dnipro. He was served a notice of suspicion of committing a criminal offence under Part 1 of Article 115 (Murder) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of seven to fifteen years.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
