Lviv region: Police identify driver who hit a pedestrian and fled the scene

The Lada Grant car used in the hit-and-run was taken to a special impound lot. The fugitive driver faces a sentence of restriction of liberty for up to three years.

The road accident occurred on 7 February at 17.50 on the Ternopil-Lviv-Rava-Ruska motorway between the villages of Shopky and Pidhaichyky. As law enforcement officers have preliminarily established, an unknown driver, driving an unidentified car, hit a pedestrian, a 49-year-old Lviv resident. As a result of the accident, the man was injured and taken to hospital. The driver fled the scene.

Criminal police operatives, together with investigators and officers of the Patrol Police Response Sector of the Police Department No. 2 of the Lviv District Police Department No. 2, as well as officers of the Department of Organisational and Analytical Support and Operational Response and other police services of Lviv region, were involved in the search for the fugitive driver and the car that had been hit.

As a result of the measures taken, having studied the footage from the video surveillance cameras of the Safe Lviv Region system, law enforcement officers found that the pedestrian was hit by an 80-year-old resident of Lviv driving a Lada Grant. The car involved in the hit-and-run was taken to the impound lot.

Investigators of the territorial police unit opened criminal proceedings over the incident under Part 1 of Article 286 (Violation of traffic safety rules) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The maximum penalty provided for by the sanction of the article is restraint of liberty for up to three years, with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for up to three years.

The police are establishing the circumstances of the incident.
