In Lviv region, employees of a training and rehabilitation centre committed sexual violence

The police are checking information about violent acts against pupils of a training and rehabilitation centre in the Lviv region as part of criminal proceedings

This was reported by the Police of the Lviv region.

On 27 September, a representative of the Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Children’s Rights reported to the police that employees of a training and rehabilitation centre in Lviv region were committing violence against young people and minors in the institution.

Investigators, juvenile police officers and officers of other police services of Lviv region immediately went to the centre.

Investigators of the territorial police unit initiated criminal proceedings under Part 3 of Article 153 (Sexual violence) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for up to seven years.

Several children from the centre have already been relocated to other institutions, and law enforcement officers have also filed a motion to suspend the head of the institution from performing his duties.

The information about the lack of police response to statements and reports for six months is not true, as no other reports of unlawful acts committed against the children of the above-mentioned educational and rehabilitation centre were received by the Lviv regional police in 2024.

Meanwhile, in 2023, an inspection was carried out following an appeal from a representative of an NGO regarding illegal actions by the management of the institution. During the inspection, a commission was set up with the participation of representatives of the Department of Education and Science of the Lviv Regional State Administration and other representatives, but the facts described in the appeal were not confirmed.

The investigation is ongoing and will be monitored by the Lviv regional police.
