Lviv region: Police detain offender on suspicion of stealing a Volkswagen
The stolen car was found by community police officers. The suspect faces imprisonment for up to eight years for his crime.
According to law enforcement officers, on April 27, around 10:00 a.m., in the city of Novyi Kalyniv, Sambir district, a 33-year-old local resident illegally seized a Volkswagen Golf belonging to a 21-year-old resident of the city and drove off in an unknown direction. After discovering the car was missing, the owner turned to the police for help.
Community police officers and officers of other units of the Sambir District Police Department were involved in solving the crime. As a result of the measures taken, having studied the video surveillance footage of the “Safe Lviv Region” system, the community police officers found the wanted car in a neighboring village, established the location of the offender and detained him in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
Investigators of the territorial police unit, under the procedural supervision of the Sambir District Prosecutor’s Office, served the detainee a notice of suspicion of committing a criminal offense under Part 2 of Article 289 (Illegal seizure of a vehicle) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of five to eight years with or without confiscation of property.
Law enforcement officers took the found car to the impound lot.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and the court will soon choose a measure of restraint against the suspect.
