Illegal deforestation worth almost UAH 2 million detected in Sokal region

Environmental Prosecutor’s Office files claims for compensation of almost UAH 2 million for illegal logging

Following claims filed by prosecutors of the Specialised Environmental Prosecutor’s Office of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a court opened proceedings against a forestry enterprise. The prosecutors are demanding compensation for damages caused to the environment.

The prosecutors’ claims are based on the illegal felling of 133 trees within the Bendyuzhske forestry within the administrative boundaries of the Sokal and Radekhiv territorial communities. The estimated value of the damage is about UAH 2 million.

In accordance with Article 69 of the Forest Code of Ukraine, special use of forest resources in a designated forest area is carried out under a special permit – a logging ticket.

According to the current legislation, a permanent forest user must ensure the protection and preservation of forest plantations. Accordingly, it is the permanent forest user who is responsible for the illegal felling of trees by unidentified third parties.

In response to the violation, the prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit.

It should be noted that the criminal proceedings over the illegal logging are still pending in court.
