Police detain offender suspected of murdering a couple in Stryi region

In one of the villages of Stryi district, the detainee killed his fellow villagers, a husband and wife, during a domestic conflict.

The maximum sentence he faces is life imprisonment.

The police received a report about the body of a man without signs of life found in the yard of a household in a village in Stryi district on the morning of 28 October. An investigative team from Police Department No. 1 of the Stryi District Police Department immediately arrived at the scene.

Law enforcement officers identified the deceased as the 67-year-old owner of the household. In addition, the body of his 64-year-old wife was found in the house, also without signs of life. Police found numerous stab wounds on both victims.

Criminal investigation operatives, forensic specialists and officers of other police services of Lviv region were also involved in solving the crime. The investigation established that the murder of the couple was committed by their 69-year-old fellow villager, with whom the victims had a conflict. The night before, the suspect came to the neighbours’ house and started a quarrel that escalated into a fight, during which he stabbed the husband and wife numerous times, causing fatal injuries, and fled the scene.

The police established the fugitive’s whereabouts and detained him in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Under the procedural supervision of the Stryi District Prosecutor’s Office, investigators of the territorial police unit served the offender a notice of suspicion of committing a criminal offence under p.1 of Part 2 of Art. 115 (Intentional murder of two or more persons) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The maximum penalty provided by the sanction of the article is life imprisonment.

A pre-trial investigation is underway, and the court will soon choose a measure of restraint against the suspect.
