Head of quarry on trial for illegal sand mining worth over UAH 21 million

Prosecutors of the Specialised Environmental Prosecutor’s Office (as a department) of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office have sent to court an indictment against the head of a quarry of a company in Lviv region. He is charged with illegal extraction of minerals of local importance on a large scale (Part 3 of Article 240 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The investigation established that the defendant, being an official, instructed his subordinates to illegally extract local minerals (sand) outside the land plot defined by a special permit for the use of subsoil.

As a result, between August and November 2022, the man extracted more than 19,000 m3 of sand using special equipment and subordinate employees.

The territory in question is outside one of the villages of Pustomyty district, Lviv region.

As a result of the official’s illegal activities, the state suffered damage worth over UAH 21 million.

The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Main Department of the National Police of Ukraine, based on the materials of the Lviv District Department of the Security Service of Ukraine in Lviv region.

Note: In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person shall be presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict of guilty.
