Police detain offender who tried to steal a car in Lviv

On the way, the stolen car stopped, and the suspect could not start the engine a second time, so he left the vehicle on the roadside and fled.

He faces a sentence of imprisonment for up to eight years with confiscation of property.

According to law enforcement officers, on 28 October at around three in the morning on Zelena Street, the offender tried to steal a Hyundai Santa Fe, which the owner had left near his house. Having broken the door window, he entered the car, started the engine, but after driving a few metres, the car stopped. The thief was unable to restart the engine, so he fled, leaving the Hyundai on the roadside and taking the radio with him.

Criminal police operatives, investigators and employees of other services of the Police Department No. 2 of the Lviv District Police Department No. 2, as well as employees of the Criminal Analysis Department of the Lviv Police, were involved in solving the crime.

The law enforcers conducted a series of operational and search activities, studied the footage from the video surveillance cameras of the Safe Lviv Region system, established the location of the offender – a 21-year-old resident of Lviv – and detained him in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Investigators of the territorial police unit, under the procedural supervision of the Frankivsk District Prosecutor’s Office, served the detainee a notice of suspicion of committing a criminal offence under Part 2 of Article 15 – Part 2 of Article 289 (Attempted illegal seizure of a vehicle) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of five to eight years with or without confiscation of property.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and the court will soon choose a measure of restraint against the suspect.
