Law enforcers detain doctor in Lviv on suspicion of taking bribe from conscript

The head of a department of a Lviv hospital demanded $600 from a conscript for entering false information in a medical report, which, after passing a medical advisory commission, would allow him to receive a disability group and the status of “limitedly fit” for military service.

The offender was exposed by investigators of the General Criminal Investigation Department of the Lviv Police Investigation Department jointly with operatives of the Strategic Investigations Department in Lviv region, officers of the SBU Military Counterintelligence Department, under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Specialised Defence Prosecutor’s Office in the Western Region.

Law enforcers detained the doctor in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine after she received the second part of the $300 bribe from a conscript.

She was served a notice of suspicion of committing a criminal offence under Part 3 of Article 368 (Acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for up to ten years with disqualification to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years, with confiscation of property.

During the authorised searches, law enforcement officers seized the suspect’s medical records, drafts and other material evidence of her involvement in the illegal activity.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and the court will soon choose a measure of restraint. Other participants of the criminal scheme are also being identified.
