A driver hit a cyclist and fled from the scene in Chervonohrad

In Chervonohrad, police track down driver who hit a cyclist and fled the scene

The Mazda car used in the hit-and-run was taken to the impound lot by law enforcement officers. The driver, a 39-year-old resident of the district centre, who was driving while intoxicated, faces up to three years’ imprisonment with deprivation of the right to drive for up to five years.

The road accident occurred on 9 July at around eight o’clock in the morning on the Zhovkva-Chervonohrad-Kovel motorway near the village of Mezhyrichchya, Chervonohrad district.

An unknown driver, driving an unidentified car, hit a cyclist, a 53-year-old resident of Chervonohrad, and fled the scene. As a result of the accident, the man was injured and taken to hospital.

Following the measures taken, having studied the video surveillance footage of the “Safe Lviv Region” system, the criminal police operatives, together with investigators and officers of the Patrol Police Response Sector of the Chervonohrad District Police Department, established that the cyclist was hit by a 38-year-old resident of the district, who was driving a Mazda. The police established his whereabouts, and the car used in the hit-and-run was taken to the impound lot.

It was also established that the driver was driving the vehicle in a state of intoxication.

Investigators of the territorial police unit opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 286-1 (Violation of the rules of road safety or operation of transport by persons driving vehicles while intoxicated) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for up to three years with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of three to five years.

The police are establishing the circumstances of the incident.
