In Kulikovo, a 22-year-old drunken Lviv man fatally injured a pedestrian in a stolen car

A 22-year-old man from Lviv, involved in the illegal possession of a vehicle and the commission of a traffic accident that caused the death of a person, faces a penalty of up to ten years in prison.

The traffic accident happened on January 3 around 6:40 a.m. on the Lviv-Rava-Ruska highway in the village of Kulikiv, Lviv district. As previously established by the law enforcement officers, a 22-year-old man from Lviv, driving a Hyundai Sonata, drove into the oncoming traffic lane, then into a public transport stop, where he ran into a 55-year-old local resident. After that, the passenger car collided with the Scania road train parked on the roadside. The pedestrian who was hit died of his injuries at the scene.

During the investigation of the circumstances of the traffic accident, it was established that the driver of the Sonata was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, as well as that he stole the vehicle on Vicheva Square in Lviv around five o’clock in the morning.

According to the facts, the investigators of the department of investigation of crimes in the field of transport of the police of Lviv region opened criminal proceedings under part 3 of article 286-1 (Violation of the rules of road traffic safety or operation of transport by persons driving vehicles while intoxicated) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. In addition, investigators of the Lviv District Police Department No. 1 opened criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 289 (Illegal possession of a vehicle) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The maximum punishment provided by the sanctions of the articles is imprisonment for a term of up to ten years with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of five to ten years.

The driver of the “Sonata” was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, the court will soon choose a preventive measure for him. The car that was hit was taken by the police to the detention center.

An investigation is underway, law enforcement officers are establishing the circumstances of the incident.
