Senior official of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine detained in Lviv for bribery

Under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the head of one of the interregional departments for the execution of criminal sentences of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine was served a notice of suspicion.

He is charged with obtaining an unlawful benefit by an official holding a responsible position, committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, combined with extortion (Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

According to the investigation, the official received a EUR 2,040 bribe from an individual entrepreneur.

The suspect demanded an unlawful benefit for the entrepreneur’s business activities on the territory of a penitentiary institution located in Lviv region. It was the performance of works involving the labour of convicts.

Law enforcement officers detained the man in accordance with Art. 208 of the CPC of Ukraine, immediately after receiving the bribe.

The court imposed on the detainee a custody as a measure of restraint with the right to be released on bail in the amount of UAH 2 million.

Investigative actions are ongoing, all persons involved in the crime are being identified.

The pre-trial investigation is being carried out by investigators of the Territorial Department of the State Bureau of Investigation based on the materials of the SBU Office in Lviv region.

Note: In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person shall be presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved by law and established by a court verdict of guilty.
