“In June this year, Ukrzaliznytsia expects the results of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) project competition to approve funding for more than €80 million for the development of railway crossing points with the European Union.
This was reported by the Ministry of Community Development.
To recap: The European railway from Mostyska to Lviv may cost UAH 1.8 billion:
“This is a rather expensive infrastructure project. Because currently, the total length of the track from the border to Lviv is 80 kilometres, of which 12 km is a combined track (when both narrow and wide tracks run in parallel). According to preliminary estimates, the project could cost UAH 1.8 billion. Obviously, the state or local budgets do not have such funds. Therefore, a significant part of the design and construction work will be funded by the USAID donor,” Rudnytskyi commented.
These projects also include the preparation of a strategy for the development of European gauge tracks (1435 mm wide) at the Lviv railway junction.
The proposal refers to the preparation for the implementation of a project to develop the Lviv railway junction, taking into account the prospects for expanding the 1435 mm gauge railway network of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) in Ukraine. The planned duration of the project is 2024-2027.
Other proposals include the preparation of a feasibility study for the introduction of a 1435 mm gauge on the Chop-Lviv section, reconstruction of railway facilities with the construction of a 1435 mm gauge, and electrification of the Lviv-Chernivtsi – Vadul-Siret – State Border, Pavlovo-2 / Matyovtse – Uzhhorod section.
The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a European Union fund established in 2014 for EU infrastructure investments in transport, energy, digital and telecommunications projects. The goal is to strengthen ties between EU member states.
In May 2022, the European Commission unveiled a set of measures to create “Solidarity Roads” to help Ukraine restore supply chains and export agricultural products.
The EC stressed its readiness to increase the infrastructure capacity of new export corridors and establish new infrastructure links as part of Ukraine’s recovery. In this context, the CEF has become a key programme for improving transport links between the EU and Ukraine, developing the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and facilitating exports from Ukraine to the EU.
