Waste management forum starts in Lviv region

“Waste Management in Ukraine: Legislation, Economics, Technology”: XI National Forum kicks off in Lviv Oblast

The main topic of this year’s forum is inter-municipal cooperation as a key tool for implementing waste management reform at the regional level.

For eleven years, the National Forum “Waste Management in Ukraine: Legislation, Economics, Technology” has been a public platform for discussing the most pressing issues in the field of waste management, finding optimal solutions and implementing them in accordance with European norms and standards.

The main topic of this year’s forum is inter-municipal cooperation as a key tool for implementing waste management reform at the regional level.

During the two days of the forum, participants will discuss the organisation of waste management in communities under martial law, identify key areas for the implementation of the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management” and look for innovative approaches to create a modern waste recycling infrastructure.

The forum was opened by Svitlana Hrynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, and Oleh Bondarenko, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management. Participants included representatives of central and local government authorities, international organisations, scientists, business structures operating in the waste management sector, manufacturers of waste processing machinery and equipment, institutions working in the field of environmental safety and protection, environmental NGOs, and the media.

The Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Regional State Administration is represented by Hanna Bashta, Deputy Director of the Department, and Dmytro Kozlinskyi, Head of the Department for Environmental Management and Permitting.

The programme of the forum includes:

Oksana Viytyk, Acting Director of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Regional State Administration, notes that effective waste management is one of the key challenges for Ukrainian communities today. In the context of martial law, when resources and attention are focused on defending our country, it is also important to continue systemic reforms that will ensure sustainable development and environmental safety. At this stage, there are many problematic issues that need to be discussed in a broader, unbiased, professional, socially active community.

The Forum is a unique platform for professional dialogue, exchange of ideas and search for solutions. Together we will be able to lay the foundation for a modern waste management system that will meet the requirements of time and the needs of future generations.

The event was organised by the Ukrainian Ecological League with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management, and the Centre for Environmental Education and Information.
