Lvivteploenergo repair teams are working to restore hot water supply after hydraulic testing of heating networks. This morning, hot water is being supplied to 1206 houses in Zaliznychnyi, Halytskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Lychakivskyi, as well as 314 houses in Sykhivskyi and 143 in Frankivskyi districts. Currently, 93 houses in Sykhivskyi and 132 in Frankivskyi districts of the city are not receiving hot water.
“The hydraulic tests, which check the condition of our heating networks, have virtually finished. For more than a month, our repair teams have been repairing the damages and breaks that have been identified.
How does it work? We maintain large main pipelines that supply water to houses from CHPP-1. And from the central pipe, there are branches in the districts and streets. If there is damage to the central main pipe, we cannot supply hot water until we repair it. If there is a break at the end of the main pipeline, we can “cut off” that part and supply hot water to the streets at the beginning, while those closer to the end have to wait for workers to repair the damage.
At the same time, when repairing damage, we look at the overall condition of the entire pipeline section. If we see that there is a tear in the pipe with a diameter of about 10 cm, and then the whole thing is rusty and in disrepair, it makes no sense to just patch the tear, so we change that section of the pipe. This requires additional time. And given that a significant number of Lvivteploenergo employees are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there are not enough workers to do everything quickly. And it needs to be done well, because winter is ahead,” explains Volodymyr Shteibart, chief engineer of Lvivteploenergo.
Lvivteploenergo also explains that the completion of the hydraulic tests does not guarantee that no other repairs will be carried out on a particular section of the pipeline.
“During hydraulics, we detect damage to the pipelines and look at the overall condition of the entire network section. If the damage is minor, we repair it and restore hot water supply. However, if we realise that a section of the network is in a critical condition, we will return to that area during the summer and before the heating season starts to replace it. In other words, we restore hot water supply after hydraulic repairs and then plan when we can return to the site during the summer, as it is impossible to do everything at once.
We have to understand that 70% of all our networks are worn out and need to be replaced. That is why the lion’s share of repair work in the summer is spent on replacing networks. And during such works, we turn off hot water, but only locally, i.e. for a small number of houses,” adds Volodymyr Shteibart, Chief Engineer of Lvivteploenergo.
