The community of Lviv mourns the death of Ihor Yukhnovsky: information about the burial

At the age of 99, Ihor Rafailovich Yukhnovskyi – Ukrainian theoretical physicist, public and political activist, professor, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Hero of Ukraine (2005), honorary citizen of Lviv (2016) passed away. The Lviv community expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Igor Rafailovich.

“Sad news. Ihor Rafailovich Yukhnovsky passed away. A bright, kind, wise person. Honorary citizen of Lviv. Creator of Ukraine. The face of Independence,” wrote Andriy Sadovy.

The funeral and farewell ceremony for Igor Yukhnovsky will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, in the Holy Intercession Cathedral of OCU (2 Hrushevsky St.). Parastas will be on March 27 (Wednesday), at 7:00 p.m.

Ihor Yukhnovsky will be buried at the Lychakiv cemetery in the family tomb.

Ihor Rafailovich Yukhnovsky created the well-known Lviv Scientific School of Static Physics in the world. He developed original and powerful methods of theoretical studies of systems of interacting particles: the method of collective variables and the method of displacements and collective variables, which made it possible to solve a series of fundamental problems of condensed matter physics.

In 1990, Ihor Yukhnovsky was elected a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. He led the opposition in the parliament as the Chairman of the People’s Council.

In 1991, he was a candidate for the President of Ukraine.

From December 1999 to March 2002, he was the Chairman of the Committee on Science and Education of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

In June 2006, by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Ihor Yukhnovskyi was appointed to at. Heads of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance — a central body of executive power with a special status.

One of the founders and member (since 2011) of the “First of December” initiative group.

In 2016, on the occasion of the 760th anniversary of Lviv, Ihor Yunovsky was awarded the title “Honorary Citizen of the City of Lviv”.
