In the Lviv region, two communities will improve the waste management system

The second stage of the training program “Steps for specialists: Waste management”, which was launched last year in “U-LEAD with Europe”, has been launched. Two communities from Lviv Oblast participate in the initiative – Boryslavska and Sambirska.

This was reported in the regional office of U-LEAD in the Lviv region.

According to the information of the regional office, 12 project proposals from territorial communities from all over Ukraine were selected for participation in the second stage of the training program. U-LEAD experts will conduct a series of training events and individual consultations for the selected communities. The work will continue until November 2023, by which time the final versions of the project applications and preliminary versions of the design and estimate documentation should be worked out.

“We are starting the second phase of our training program and we see that the issue of waste management is important for the Ministry of Recovery and other partners. Now it is necessary that territorial communities receive help in developing projects in the field of waste management and finding sources of their financing. We are ready to cooperate with territorial communities, relevant ministries and other partners in order to achieve effective results,” said Oleg Chernysh, adviser on municipal investments at ULEAD.

The selected projects relate to various areas, including the construction or reconstruction of landfills for solid household waste, the establishment of waste processing facilities, the improvement of the waste management system or the integrated management of bio-waste in territorial communities. This was discussed during an information session on the basis of the U-LEAD regional office in the Rivne region.

It is reported that the projects are different in scale and budget, the cost of which ranges from 100,000 euros to 18 million euros. In general, the average value of the selected projects is 2.5 million euros.

“The communities of Boryslav and Sambir, which prepared high-quality project proposals, passed the second stage of the training initiative on waste management. Subsequently, U-LEAD experts will finalize the submitted projects with them. As a result, communities will have ready-made project applications for submission to grant competitions in the relevant areas,” said the head of the U-LEAD regional office in the Lviv region, Halyna Khrushchak.

The Ukraine Program for Local Empowerment, Accountability and Development “U-LEAD with Europe” is jointly funded by the EU and its member states Germany, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia and Slovenia to support Ukraine on its way to strengthen local municipality. U-LEAD promotes transparent, accountable and multi-level governance in Ukraine that meets the needs of citizens and empowers communities.
