NEFCO’s visit to Lviv included a site visit to a new social housing project for internally displaced persons in need of rehabilitation, as well as a wastewater treatment plant undergoing modernisation, and a meeting with the Mayor of Lviv.
The construction of the first of eight houses is in its final stages. The residents are expected to move in by the end of 2024.
Ulf Boyo, NEFCO’s Vice President for Eastern Europe, visited Lviv. During the visit, he met with Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and inspected the progress of the construction of new social housing for internally displaced persons (IDPs). He also visited a rehabilitation centre for war victims, a school damaged by a Russian missile attack, a facility that processes household biological waste into industrial soil fertiliser, and the Lvivvodokanal wastewater treatment plant, which is undergoing modernisation.
Construction of the first building began in December 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. In total, the project, which has a budget of €19.5 million, involves the construction of eight houses. The project is financed under the “Housing for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Reconstruction of Liberated Cities in Ukraine” programme, funded by the European Union and managed by NEFCO.
“In Lviv, we have a very short period from idea to tangible result. The new housing project is a good example for other cities. We are very grateful to the European Union, the project’s grantor, and NEFCO for their support in providing urgent housing for wounded IDPs,” said Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.
The construction of the first house is currently in its final stages. The residents are expected to move in by the end of this year. The eight buildings are designed to accommodate up to 750 people and are intended for temporary accommodation of wounded IDPs undergoing rehabilitation at the NESLAMNI rehabilitation centre. The contractor has also started laying the foundations for the next buildings.
“The city is actively working to implement this project as soon as possible so that people in need of housing can settle in Lviv and undergo rehabilitation in comfortable conditions,” said Yuriy Telipskyi, head of the Lviv Intercity Bureau of Technical Inventory.
“It is very pleasant to see the progress of the construction of a new housing project. The construction of the first house is well underway and we expect the first IDPs to move in by the end of the year,” said Ulf Bojø, NEFCO Vice President for Eastern Europe, during a visit to Lviv. “We are pleased to be able to support Lviv in its efforts to provide injured IDPs with housing and comfortable living conditions during their rehabilitation. NEFCO continues to actively support Ukraine by implementing various environmental remediation projects and providing emergency shelter for IDPs.”
NEFCO is also co-financing the construction of a biogas plant for sludge processing at the municipal wastewater treatment plant together with the Eastern European Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the John Nurminen Foundation. In addition, a potential future project to renovate a war-damaged school in Lviv into a nearly zero-energy school building is being considered.
