An oak gate in a Neo-Renaissance tenement house was restored in Lviv

Lviv restorers restored the historic gate in the building at 15 Hlibova Street. The restoration work was carried out within the framework of the city’s co-financing program for the restoration of valuable elements in historic buildings. Specialists worked on the restoration of the gate for about two months.

“This oak gate is quite massive, a carriage used to enter the yard through it, and a stable was housed in a separate building in the yard. The gate was decorated with carved elements, but some of the elements have been lost. The plinth on the right door, a fragment of the shelter bar were also missing, and the carved frame and panel were damaged. So, there was a lot of work,” said restorer Rostyslav Maletskyi.

Specialists made more than 200 new inserts to replace damaged wood. Baseboards were also restored, damaged carvings in decorative frames were added, several door hinges were replaced, and authentic hinges were repaired. And also – they updated the glazing and installed a new latch.

“The cost of restoration works is about UAH 95,000. The residents’ contribution amounted to UAH 28,680, the rest of the amount was co-financed by the city,” said Pavlo Bogajchyk, director of the “Heritage Bureau” LKP.

By the way, this tenement house at 15 Hlibova Street was built in 1889-1896 in the French Neo-Renaissance style and belonged to the architect Julian Tsybulsky.

As a reminder, in 2022, 29 gates were restored in the historical part of the city, in cooperation with the residents. According to the Co-financing Program for Restoration of Valuable Elements in Historic Buildings, when restoring gates, 70% of the cost of the work is financed from the city budget, and 30% is paid by residents.
