The 25th anniversary of the Day of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv was celebrated in Lviv region

 

Every year on 11 October, the academic community of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv celebrates the University Day.

Today, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv hosted a solemn meeting of the Academic Council dedicated to this event. The event was attended by professors of the university, deans, teaching staff, students, representatives of the regional and city authorities.

According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Melnyk , Rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, IV degree, for significant services in strengthening Ukrainian statehood, significant personal contribution to the development of various spheres of public life, defence of national interests of our country, and conscientious performance of professional duty.

“On 11 October 1999, by the Decree of the President of Ukraine, the University legitimised its national status – Lviv University established the status of an institution whose mission is not only to create education and science, but also to preserve and develop national traditions, the Ukrainian language and culture. However, for the third year in a row, we celebrate the Day of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in time of war – during the barbaric aggression of Russia against sovereign Ukraine. Ukrainians are fighting not only for their independence and identity, but also for their future as a nation and a state. Thousands of heroes have given their lives to establish Ukraine’s invincibility. Unfortunately, there are students, teachers, staff and graduates of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv among them,” said Rector Volodymyr Melnyk.

Afterwards, the solemn ceremony of awarding the university staff began. A total of 80 letters of commendation were presented, and five lecturers were awarded the honorary distinction of Honoured Professor of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

“It is a great honour for me to be here today, in these difficult times, but in an atmosphere of spirituality and intellect. For centuries, Lviv University has been a true home for teachers who have made a significant contribution to the formation of our independent state. They defend the country, many of them at the cost of their own lives. The sense of Ukrainian spirit and dignity lives here. I sincerely congratulate the university on the holiday and wish everyone perseverance and our common victory!” said Andrii Godyk, Deputy Head of Lviv Regional State Administration.

For reference: Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is one of the oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions in Ukraine, which has been playing a key role in the development of national science, education and spirituality for over three centuries. The University holds a leading position among Ukrainian higher education institutions and continues to actively develop international cooperation, promoting Ukrainian studies in Europe.

This year, the number of applications for admission from applicants is the highest in the last few years. In 2023, 8200 young people became students of the university.
