Lviv Schools Move to Remote Learning Amid Rising Illness Rates
Due to the increasing incidence of flu and acute respiratory diseases, starting tomorrow, February 18, schools in the Lviv region will switch to remote learning for 11 days.
This was announced by the director of the Department of Education and Science of the Lviv Regional Administration, Oleh Paska.
“The Commission on Emergency Situations has decided to switch the region’s educational institutions to remote learning from Tuesday to the following Friday. This way, we can reduce the congregation of children and consequently the rise in illness among students. Our teachers are skilled at working on remote learning platforms, so it will be easy for us to switch to remote learning and not interrupt the educational process,” noted Oleh Paska.
Increase in Illness Rates
According to the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention, last week there was a 22% increase in flu and acute respiratory disease cases compared to previous weeks. Additionally, the epidemic threshold has been exceeded by 46%, indicating a high level of epidemic activity.
“Last week, over 15,000 cases of flu and acute respiratory diseases were registered, compared to 12,000 the previous week. A significant portion of these cases involves children aged 5-14, which corresponds to school-aged children.
Currently, 177 people are hospitalized in the region, and just yesterday, another 85 people were admitted to the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital. Therefore, the Disease Control and Prevention Center recommended implementing restrictive measures for educational and healthcare institutions,” stated Maria Ozirkovska, the deputy general director of the center.
