This year, the Hour of Code began in the Lviv community during the Informatics Week and lasted for 2 weeks – from December 5 to 16. Representatives of the IT sphere conducted lessons in schools, where they shared their knowledge with the younger generation.
In 2022, a total of 63 Hour of Code lessons were held for about 2,000 children.
“The Hour of Code is a global initiative to which Lviv joined the first among Ukrainian cities and started such a tradition. Despite various obstacles, such as air strikes or blackouts, classes in schools still took place. Hour of Code is designed to interest schoolchildren in the field of informatics, make lessons more interesting and bring practicing specialists to school. Each mentor chooses his own topic and tells students what he is interested in and what he does in the IT field. The initiative was extended to schools of the entire community. This year, we managed to conduct more than 60 lessons with mentors. Computer science teachers themselves also join in and become mentors, slightly changing the curriculum and sharing interesting information in lessons,” said Olena Gunko, head of the city’s IT department.
The Hour of Code initiative takes place jointly with the Department of Information Technologies, the Department of Education of the LMR and the public organization Maker Space Lviv. In particular, the Global Logic company joined the Hour of Code, presenting its own programs, as an example of the application of IT in life, at the Prestige Lviv Gymnasium.
“We join this initiative because children are our future. As a company, we understand that in order to be progressive in the market, we constantly need “fresh blood” that will bring new ideas and new interesting solutions to the company. Education is the basis that we must lay in the country in order to develop and move forward,” said Ihor Kostiv, junior vice president of the Global Logic company and site manager of the Lviv location.
This year, the Hour of Code took place in Lviv for the seventh time. Also, 1,536,981,757 students in the world have already joined the programming initiative.
