In Lviv, they practiced the skills of decorating Easter eggs

In the premises of the Powder Tower, a master class on Easter egg-making took place within the ethno-project “Interpretation of the Easter egg ornament”.

Pysankarstvo is one of the oldest types of folk decorative and applied art, which vividly reflected all aspects of the people’s life – history, practicality, customs, beliefs, aesthetic ideas, poetic vision, dreams about the perfection of life.

Easter eggs are masterpieces of miniature painting. Pysanky have been written in Ukraine since ancient times. This is such an ancient art that existed even before Christianity, and when it came to our land, it simply adapted all those traditions of celebrating the arrival of spring and they became a component of the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, including Easter. There have always been two types of eggs in Ukraine that were present in the Easter celebration – they are pysanky, which were written on raw eggs and were intended exclusively for gifts, and krashanky, which were painted in one color and were used in children’s and couples’ entertainment and also for consumption. That’s why today we will also paint our Easter eggs, which will then travel to your homes as a sign of the approach of the Resurrection of Christ” – noted Easter egg craftswoman Vira Manko.

The master class began with a welcome speech by the Head of the Arts Department of the Department for Culture, Nationalities and Religions – Vasyl Gladky and the project organizer – Roman Bilyavskyi (head of the NGO “Centre for the Promotion of Cultural and Social Development in Ukraine”). During the master class, the craftswoman told the children about symbols and a certain magical meaning of Easter eggs.

In addition, an Easter-themed exhibition of folk art masters from the Lviv region was presented to visitors in the halls on the first and third floors: rattles, willow branches, Easter eggs made of beads, embroidered Easter eggs, wax Easter eggs, Easter brushes and icons, etc. And you could also make yourself an Easter vine.

Afterwards, the participants received participation certificates and treats: pizza, juices, candies. 55 children took part in the event, including children from socially vulnerable categories and IDPs.

The event was organized by the NGO “Centre for the Promotion of Cultural and Social Development in Ukraine”, a co-organization of the Department for Culture, Nationalities and Religions, as well as the International Organization for Migration.
