In particular, all objects of Soviet propaganda will be dismantled in Sambir Oblast by the end of August.
In the Sambir district, the number of communist-era objects is 43, of which 29 have already been dismantled, and another 4 have been partially dismantled. Burials remain there, which must be moved to cemeteries. In particular, four communities of Sambir Oblast – Strilkivska, Ralivska, Sambirska and Khyrivska – completely got rid of Soviet symbols.
“Decommunization is a requirement of the law. We must get rid of the Soviet legacy and develop our Ukrainian culture and honor our heroes. We are not at war with people’s memory, we are not against family ties and we are not saying to destroy monuments, but they definitely should not be a place of honor. Not only monuments to Soviet soldiers are considered means of propaganda, but also monuments depicting women, children, collective farm women, which glorify the policy of collectivization – and, accordingly, the exploitation of the Ukrainian people. The inscriptions on the monuments promote the distortion of history about the Second World War and the role of the Soviet Union in the fight against Nazism. We emphasize once again that the process of decommunization must be completed by the end of 2023,” added Andriy Godyk, the first deputy head of Lviv OVA.
It should be noted that, as of today, Sambir Oblast ranks third in the region after Stryi Oblast, where the percentage of cleaning is 81%, and Yavoriv Oblast – 76%.
