During the full-scale war with the Russian enemy, it is important for Ukrainians to enlist the support of as many countries as possible, to convey the truth about the terrible events in Ukraine and to tell the whole world about Russia’s crimes.

The visit to the island state was reported to The Voice of Sokal by the Drohobych City Council.

The more international partnerships Ukraine has, both close and geographically distant, the stronger our position on the world stage. Therefore, Drohobych does not miss any opportunity to attract additional support for our community and Ukraine as a whole.

Recently, a delegation from Drohobych paid an official visit to St George’s, the capital of Grenada. The purpose of the visit was to establish partnership and mutual support between the parties. As a result, a memorandum of cooperation between the cities and support for Ukraine during a full-scale war was signed.

The delegation from Drohobych included Mayor Taras Kuchma, Head of the Healthcare Department Volodymyr Chuba and Energy Manager of the Investment and Economic Development Department Yuriy Yatskiv. The trip took place at the invitation of our partners from Grenada. Thus, all the expenses related to the trip were covered by the host party – no money was spent from the local budget. Communication between the parties was established thanks to a local businessman, Ukrainian Andrii Osadchyi, who acted as an intermediary in organising the visit of Drohobych residents to Grenada.

The delegation from Drohobych met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Grenada, Peter Charles David.

Minister Peter David expressed strong support for Ukraine in the context of Russian aggression. He stressed that Grenada stands by Ukraine’s side in its struggle for the right to choose its own path of development. The official also said that Ukraine should not give up its territorial integrity in favour of the aggressor.

During the talks, the issue of rehabilitation of servicemen and children affected by the war in Ukraine was also raised. In the spring of 2024, children from Ternopil who had been orphaned by the war were already undergoing rehabilitation in Grenada. As a result, the parties agreed to continue cooperation in this area, including organising holidays for socially disadvantaged children from the Drohobych community in Grenada. This will be an important component in helping affected Ukrainian families and children in need of support.

Another aspect of cooperation is healthcare.

Grenada has experience in implementing social programmes aimed at rehabilitating military and civilian victims of war. During the visit, it was agreed to exchange experience and explore the possibility of joint projects in the field of healthcare services, especially those related to rehabilitation and dentistry.

In addition, the parties discussed the construction of modular houses, which can be an effective solution to housing problems in the war-affected regions of Ukraine and in safer regions where internally displaced persons are relocated.

The memorandum also discussed the possibility of developing cooperation in the education sector. Drohobych is an important educational centre with the Ivan Franko Drohobych State Pedagogical University and the recently relocated Donetsk National Technical University. Grenada is also home to St George’s University, a private medical school and international university. This cooperation will allow young people from both countries to gain experience in different cultural environments.

This visit was a significant step in the development of international cooperation between Drohobych and Grenada. The signing of the memorandum of cooperation opens up new opportunities for development in various areas that are important for both Ukraine and Grenada. Further cooperation will help to strengthen relations between the two countries and develop joint projects aimed at supporting war-affected people and improving the living standards of the population.

Grenada’s forts and their significance

Forts in Grenada have played an important role in its history, as the island was a key strategic point in the Caribbean. During colonial times, Grenada became a battleground between European powers seeking to control its natural resources and favourable geographical location. Numerous forts were built for protection. For example, Fort George, located above the capital St. George, offers panoramic views of the harbour and is a symbol of the colonial past. Another important fort, Fort Frederick on Richmond Hill, is also of great historical significance and provides a glimpse into the island’s military past. These fortifications helped shape Grenada’s unique cultural identity.
