This year, in Lviv on Mechnikova Street, the construction of the Memorial Complex for the military graves of the Heroes of Ukraine will begin. Andriy Sadovyi, the city’s mayor, emphasized the significance of this event during a meeting with the public, stating that honoring the memory of the defenders is our moral obligation.
According to Sadovyi, after conducting an open architectural competition, the project that best meets the ideas and requirements of modern memorial art was selected. Working drawings are already being prepared, and the construction of the memorial at the Lychakiv Cemetery will begin this year.
The mayor also reminded that the heart of Lviv – Rynok Square, regularly becomes a place for farewell ceremonies for fallen defenders, which is a manifestation of deep respect and honor from the city’s community. The local orchestra and trumpeters participate in these ceremonies, performing farewell melodies.
The winners of the competition for the best design of the memorial were architects Viktor Golubyev and Dmytro Raifshnayder. They successfully translated the needs and wishes of the public, particularly the families of the fallen soldiers, with whom the city council has met multiple times, into the project.
The final meetings with various representatives of the city’s community have already taken place, discussing how the war has impacted the city and its future. The event was attended by over 300 people from various professions and sectors.
