Lviv fountains shut down for the winter

Lviv fountains stop working for the winter: water fountain equipment is being preserved until next year

Starting from today, 1 November, Lviv’s fountains (drinking and decorative) will stop working. The district administrations that own the fountains will have to preserve the equipment over the next few days. The fountains will resume operation next spring.

Yes, the decision to shut down the fountains is made when the outside temperature drops. When the temperature is below freezing, the water freezes in the nozzles and freezes in the water supply pipes, which can damage the fountain equipment. Since the conservation of fountain equipment takes several days, it is carried out in advance.

“The conservation of the fountains in our neighbourhood, as well as in all districts of Lviv where there are fountains, will begin today, 1 November. In particular, we are talking about the dry fountain on Svobody Avenue near the Opera House. The estimated period of complete conservation here will last 10 days. We are conserving the Da Vinci fountain on Halytska Square. The work will last approximately 7 days. We are also shutting down all the drinking fountains we have on our balance sheet – two fountains on Svobody Ave. Rynok Square, on Bandera Street – near the Organ Hall, at the intersection of Chuprynky – Bandera Streets and on Malanyuk Square.

Instead, three fountains – the Aquarius and Lion Well fountains on Copernicus Street and the fountain on Koliivshchyny Square – are scheduled to be shut down in two weeks, starting on 15 November. However, everything will depend on the weather conditions – if there is a significant frost at night, we will shut down these fountains earlier,” explained Viktor Dubyniak, head of the housing department of the Halychyna district administration.

As a reminder, 21 fountains were in operation in Lviv this year – 12 drinking and 9 decorative.

The drinking fountains are located at:

The city’s drinking fountains are on the balance sheet of district administrations, and Lvivvodokanal is responsible for water quality. The fountains are equipped with filters, so the water is of high quality and clean.

There are also decorative and dry fountains at the following locations:

Instead, 5 historic fountains – 4 on the Market Square and a fountain on Mariinsky Square – have been closed since the full invasion. The market and the fountain on Maria Square have been closed since the full-scale invasion. They plan to reopen after the victory.
