Maksym Kozytskyi, the head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, has already renamed 134 streets by his order.
A meeting of the working group on decommunization was held in the Lviv Regional State Administration. As a result, 31 streets in 11 communities in our region will be renamed. These are place names that were given back in Soviet times: Myru, Peremohy, Druzhby Narodiv, etc.
“We must do everything to ensure that there are no symbols of Soviet totalitarianism on our lands. First of all, I thank everyone who continues the process of decommunization in the Lviv region. There are no more monuments of Soviet propaganda in the public space. In 2023, 312 objects were demolished in the region. We also need to complete the process of renaming streets,” said Andriy Godyk, First Deputy Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration.
As a reminder, according to the law, communities had until April 27 this year to decide on the renaming of streets or other place names. Since then, such renaming can be carried out by order of the head of the Lviv Regional State Administration.
Based on the decision of today’s meeting of the working group, an order will be prepared by the head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, by which he will finally rename the identified place names by July 27, 2024.
By the way, by January 2024, the Lviv region was cleared of all monuments to the so-called liberators. During the year, the regional authorities, together with the communities, dismantled more than 310 “alyoshes” in the region. Next, the regional working group worked on decolonizing place names. After all, Soviet street names are clear examples of enemy propaganda; they create a false impression of a common historical past, glorify the “unity of fraternal peoples,” and praise Russian culture.
